Mothers Day Afternoon Tea

So it was Mother’s Day and I thought I had better organise something for our mothers as they have done so much for us over the last month or so.   There were so many options available from making and hosting an afternoon tea at home, to a meal out, to presents and flowers (snore). So having no inspiration and then realising my mother in law had never had a proper afternoon tea, I set about finding one with a good price locally.   To be honest I did not have to look to far as the Hotel Mr Cricket and I had our Wedding Reception, do a fabulous well priced afternoon tea with an added offer, which was if you book a  party of four or more then Mum ate free and bingo, The Hickstead House Hotel was booked.

Let’s start with the booking and it was very easy, the hotel reception staff take the bookings for the restaurant and the Manager Giles is very accommodating if you need any other special touches like champagne. In fact Giles and Jenny were the reason we booked the venue for our Wedding Reception as they were very attentive and nothing was any trouble.   They added a real personal touch to the day and again it was very reasonably priced.  When we looked for a venue, price was never really a factor, it was the room, which needed to have AirCon as we got married in the Summer and it needed to be square, as well as a private outdoor space and the Hickstead House Hotel, has a beautiful courtyard which is only accessible if you are hiring the room and  of course excellent staff.   The food was an extra bonus and once again, they could not have been more accommodating as they let us have  menu choices for our guests and changed a pudding from Meringue and Strawberries to Eton Mess.

I have now gone completely off topic sorry!  Any way I booked about 3 weeks in advance and I got the feeling it was going to be busy.  The tea was £17.50 each for Adults and £10.95 for Children and when we arrived we were seated next to the window at the front of the hotel on a well laid round table. Everything matched perfectly and the staff were at the ready to take the drinks orders.   We ordered two pots of Tea, two pots of Coffee (one Decaf), one pot Peppermint Tea and two Squashes.   Oh I forgot to mention there was me, my Mum, Mr Cricket’s Mum, My Stepdad and our two Pixies.  Also my Mum bought me some flowers and one of the waiters came over with a vase filled with water, a lovely touch as I had not asked for one.

Now normally I would not take a 4 year old or a 2 year old to afternoon tea as they get bored but for once they were fairly well behaved.     So once the drinks order had been delivered, I then asked if we could change a couple of the fillings in the sandwiches and make some with just Ham and just Cheese.  This was not a problem and they brought out plates and plates of perfectly made sandwiches filled with Smoked Salmon and Cream Cheese, Ham and Mustard, Just Ham, Just Cheese and Egg Mayo.   I must admit not the most exciting sandwich fillings but the simple fillings are sometimes the best!  The Ham was thick and tasty and the rest of the sandwiches had plenty of filling, absolutely perfect.

Then on to the Cream Tea and Cakes, I must add we had loads more tea and coffee, it was flowing.  Anyway the Scones were home made and still warm, fresh from the oven.  They crumbled as you cut them and with Strawberry Jam and Clotted Cream they were ACE.   They were also huge and you really only need one each.  Then the CAKES!!!!!!!!   Well there was a Homemade Eclair, filled with Cream and topped with a Bittersweet Dark Chocolate and then a Homemade Shortbread, Slice of Lemon Cake and Meringue Tart, topped with Cream, Strawberries and drizzled with Dark Chocolate, which crumbled as you ate it..  We all got one each and ended up taking a doggy bag home with various cakes as to be honest there was slightly too much, but that’s what you want from an Afternoon Tea.

The Hickstead House Hotel is a lovely little boutique hotel set in the countryside, at the foot of the  South Downs and just off the A23 towards Brighton.  They have 52 bedrooms and are a great wedding venue and they have a fabulous restaurant.
